A sculptural/musical interpretation of the distance which divides my youth from adulthood. Here, this journey is presented through the linear elevation profile of the terrain which blankets that divide.

Encapsulated within a rectangular prism of Cherry, a single length of carved Sapele details an elevation profile which covers 72 linear miles between my family farm and current residence in Cincinnati, OH. This profile was then graphed onto sheet music by picking an arbitrary elevation to equate with middle C. This landscape is in the key of C Major, and has just over two octaves of relief. After determining an appropriate spacing to suit the scale of the piece, the aluminum was cut and tuned to generate pitches which correspond with the elevation represented directly above them. Each chime is stamped with its principal note.

From my perspective, the farm is shrine to the sense of wonder, curiosity, and exploration which circumscribe the most treasured moments of my youth. This work is both a delineation and compression of the literal, experiential, and chronographic distance between my present and past.
